Resources and Stats
Stats and resources
In Utopia a creature has a set of stats, points, resources and limitations, that are highly inter-dependant. Here are the common overview of all of them.
Points
Each level you gain 1 Talent point, and 1 Subtrait Point.
Talent Points
Can be accumulated over multiple levels and allow to acquire talents. The amount of points spent is equal to sum of Body Mind and Soul a talent gives.
Subtrait points
Can be spent to increase one Subtrait by 1. Can be accumulated up to 3, but generally should be spent during level-up. Subtraits cannot be increased past the limit, described in section Limits
Stats
Inherent
All species have a base stats called Constitution, Endurance, and Effervescence:
- Constitution - How much your body is more suited to resist physical beating, affects maximum #SHP;
- Endurance - How your body is more adapted to straining itself, affects maximum #Stamina;
- Effervescence - How strongly your body is attached to your soul (and prevents Dying), affects maximum #DHP.
They can be icreased by acquiring talents in Prowess talent tree.
Body, Mind and Soul
These stats grow as you acquire more Talents. Each talent provides a set of these stats, and they affect how much Subtraits you can acquire and your main resources - #SHP, #DHP and #Stamina.
Resources
SHP
Your surface health is a metric of external wounds. Maximum points means that you are unscathed, whereas having no points means you are heavily wounded. SHP restores after a Rest.
DHP
Your deep health measures internal and mortal wounds, such as broken appendages and system failure. Your character’s deep health is directly connected to their soul's ability to continue piloting their body. When this drops to 0, their soul disconnects and their body dies. Restoring DHP usually requires Restoration spells or healing items.
Stamina
Your stamina is the overall energy you may expend. Stamina is used not only for transit combat maneuvers such as sprinting, special attacks, and flying, but also for casting spells and committing daunting tasks. When your character runs out of stamina, they will begin paying stamina costs with deep health.
Restoring Stamina requires taking Deep Breath action, using items or resting. Outside of turn order it means that standing still can restore 60 stamina in a minute.
House rules preview: restoring stamina requires short period of inactivity, meaning no meaningful actions can be taken during deep breath.
Other resources
Talents sometimes introduce additional resources that can be used, for example Healing Charges from the specialist talent "Natural Healer".
Limits and Calculations
Main Resources
Your maximum #SHP, #DHP and #Stamina are affected by your stats in this way:
- Maximum SHP is equal to Body Score * Constitution+ Level
- Maximum DHP is equal to Soul Score * Effervescence + Level
- Maximum stamina is equal to Mind Score * Endurance + Level
Traits
Each trait score is equal to the sum of its Subtraits. For instance, if you have a Fortitude score of 3 and a Power score of 4, your Strength score is 7.
A subtrait cannot be increased beyond a score of Body, Mind or soul it is based on (see table below).
The exception: the maximum for subtraits you are gifted in are doubled. For instance, if you have 4 Body points and you are gifted in Fortitude, you may have a maximum Fortitude of 8.
| Based on | Trait | Subtraits |
|---|---|---|
| Body | Agility | Speed + Dexterity |
| Body | Strength | Power + Fortitude |
| Mind | Intellect | Engineering + Memory |
| Mind | Will | Resolve + Awareness |
| Soul | Display | Portrayal + Stunt |
| Soul | Charm | Appeal + Language |
Subtraits
Your Subtraits grow using you #Subtrait points, but there is a limit to how much you can increase them.
When your character levels up, you get a chance to increase one of their subtraits.
It may be any subtrait, though none of your character's subtraits can go beyond its maximum:
- Body based subtraits cannot be increased past your Body score, minimum of 1.
- Mind based subtraits cannot be increased past your Mind score, minimum of 1.
- Soul based subtraits cannot be increased past your Soul score, minimum of 1.
- The exception: the maximum for sub-traits you are gifted in are doubled. For instance, if you have 4 Body points and you are gifted in Fortitude, you may have a maximum Fortitude of 8.
Modifiers
Modifiers for Traits and Subtraits are calculated identically: score - 4.
